CHAPTER EIGHT

After they ate breakfast, they decided to go out, hit the town, and be tourists. Their chances of running into Luis weren’t any greater if they left the hotel. If anything, the chances went down, since New Orleans was a big city. Running into him coincidentally would be nearly impossible, whereas if they stayed at the hotel, he might know exactly where she was.

They spent the morning driving around, sightseeing, and then got lunch at a small but expensive restaurant and tried a pastry called beignets that Tulia loved. Afterward, Tulia wanted to return to the hotel room to check up on Cicero. As far as she knew, Luis didn't have any lock-picking skills, but she was still worried her ex would somehow find his way into her hotel room and use her bird to blackmail her. It was a relief to return and find that everything was just as she had left it.

“Do you think he knows where I’m staying, or is he just out there driving around the city in hopes of running into me?” she asked as she got Cicero's harness on. The African grey was bored, having been alone for most of the day, and she wanted to take him out for a walk. The city was full of character; she was sure he would be fascinated by all of the new sights to see.

“It's hard to say, without knowing how he’s tracking you,” Samuel said. “It could be he knows the hotel but not the room number, or he knows both, but he’s not sure how he wants to confront you yet.”

“I hate the thought that he could have been watching us at some point today without us knowing it,” she said, moving Cicero from the back of the chair to her shoulder. He nibbled on her ear gently with his beak. “Hopefully, if he saw you with me, he'll realize getting me alone will be harder than he expected.”

“I hope that's the case,” Samuel said. He didn't sound certain, and she frowned.

“You think he would try something even with you right there?”

“Seeing you with another man might make him irrational, and that would make him dangerous.”

“Well, if he didn't go and cheat on me, he wouldn't have to worry about seeing me with someone else,” she grumbled. “I know I've said it before, but I really hate this.”

She locked the door behind her as they stepped into the hall. They took the elevator down to the ground floor. The convention was in full swing, and people were going in and out of the hotel lobby in a steady stream. It wasn't just hotel guests who were attending; a lot of locals seemed to be attending as well.

“You know, I bought tickets to this thing,” she said. “I'd still like to check it out at some point. Maybe after we get back from our walk with Cicero?”

“Sure,” he said. “It might give us some insight into the other mystery we’re dealing with.”

She felt a little guilty for the murder not being her focus.
